Today, the afternoon class accepted the challenge from the student council to see if we could go the entire afternoon without using any power or technology. At first as we sat in the dark it didn't seem like it was going to be a difficult task. However, we quickly realized when we couldn't do attendance that perhaps this wasn't going to be as easy as we thought! I challenged the Kiddoes to think of spaces in the school where there were no windows. They quickly realized both the gym and the washroom were window free. "How are we going to have gym today?" one asked. "It would be dangerous." another replied. You could see them begin to realize how much we take for granted each day. During centre time, I noticed many upset faces when some Kiddoes wanted to upload learning to their portfolios and couldn't. When we had alphabet time, many had trouble seeing the chart paper. At the end of the day, we were thankful to turn the lights back on, and realized how lucky we were to have access to power and technology. However I told them, it is a trade off. Having access to these 'helpful' things comes at a cost. We need to remember that it is up to us to protect the earth and to make sure we conserve and watch how we use power and technology every day!
