Hug A Tree

We were very lucky to welcome Wayne to our room today from Outdoor Education. The purpose of his visit was teach us what we should do if we ever find ourselves lost in the great outdoors.

During his presentation we learned six important things.

1) Always tell an adult where we are going.

2) Always carry water, a snack, a whistle and a plastic garbage bag when we are hiking.

3) If we get lost, find a large tree and sit under it. We should not keep moving enabling search and rescue to find us.

4) Roll our socks up over our pants, tuck our arms into our shirts and do our jackets up tight. Make a
small hole for our face in the garbage bag and put it over our heads.

 5) A whistle can be used to scare off any animals and to alert those searching for us. We should use three short bursts on the whistle.

6) Perhaps the most important thing we need to remember is that our parents are not mad at us for getting lost. We should not be scared to be found!!

Wayne also talked to us about how search and rescue teams use different strategies to locate lost individuals. It was super cool to learn how we could create footprints by stepping on tinfoil which could aid rescuers in their search.

It was a pretty informative presentation and each Kiddoe is going home with a brochure to read with his/her family on the weekend.

Hope everyone hikes safe this summer!!.
