Patterns (KA & KB)

Math this week has been all about patterns! So far, we have learned that a pattern is something that repeats at least three times. We have also learned how to identify what the core of the pattern is, and what the name of the pattern is (AB, ABB, ABC, etc.). Over the last two days we did a “What Comes Next?” challenge where the Kiddos circulated through 10 different pattern stations and had to figure out what came next in a pre-made pattern. The Kiddos had a lot of fun with this and were pretty proud that I wasn’t able to “trick” them.

By the end of our unit, the Kiddos will understand that patterns are everywhere and can occur in many different ways. They will also be able to create their own patterns using different materials, and identify patterns in our environment. The Kiddos can practice this at home by:

  •  Making a color pattern using 2 or 3 different colors (red, red, blue; red, red, blue; red, red, blue). Have them describe the pattern, identify the core, name the pattern (AAB), and say what would come next.
  • Going on a pattern hunt at home. See how many things you can find that have patterns and ask your child to describe them!
