Apple Turkeys

Over the past two days we had our first lesson stemming from our arts education curriculum (CPK.4). As the topic of "turkeys" seemed to keep coming up in discussions with Thanksgiving quickly approaching, I presented to the Kiddos some information surrounding the differences between farm (domestic) and wild turkeys. It was an interesting discussion as we learned many "cool" facts that were both surprising and at times quite funny. I then presented a challenge to the class to create an image of either a wild or farm turkey and incorporate some of the facts we discussed. I described to the Kiddos the concept of space on a paper and how an artist will use space to enhance a drawing. Rather than just quickly drawing objects anywhere, artists will think how does the selection and placement of objects portray meaning. With this in mind, we set out to create visual representations. As always, the Kiddos did an amazing job. It was quite interesting to listen to them explain why there was a barn and fence in the picture of a farm turkey, or why there was a tree and seeds on the ground where you might see a wild turkey in their representations.

In the afternoon, we had fun discussing some of our Thanksgiving traditions. Many of us realized we share the same tradition of having a big family dinner. After talking about a beautifully set table for Thanksgiving, we decided to make an interesting and fun centerpiece! With a bit of a giggle, we turned the apples the Kiddos brought to school into 'apple turkeys' with our Grade 4/5 Learning Buddies. These 'apple turkeys' certainly led to many interesting and entertaining conversations in our room. How about in your homes??

Have a great holiday!
