Last week here in Kindergarten, we started our first math
unit! The Kiddos are learning about sorting, and we will be spending the next
couple of weeks practicing sorting objects and using “math words”. We started
out by discovering ways in which objects can be the same by pointing out their
attributes (ex. color, size, shape, etc.) and putting them into sets. In our
next lesson, the Kiddos were introduced to a sorting mat, and learned what a “sorting
rule” was. First, they decide what their
rule is (ex. things that are red, things that are not red), and then place the
objects on the respective space on the mat.
Things that are red, things that are not red. |
They were then put into partners and given a basket of random
objects to sort, and their partner tried to guess what their sorting rule was!
They sure had a lot of fun trying to trick their friends, and I loved hearing
the Kiddos using all of their new “math words” (ex. things that are, things
that are not, sorting rule, same, different).
In Kindergarten, we practice sorting in math so that our
Kiddos understand that objects have similarities and differences, and that
things can be sorted in different ways. Sorting also helps us organize! By the end of our unit, they will be able to
identify attributes, sort objects, and explain their sorting rule. So far, they
are doing fantastic!
