Today was a great day in our K room filled with lots of excitement. First up was a visit from the school resource officer, Cst. Rieger. He gave us a ton of Halloween safety tips, as well as a really cool book mark.
This afternoon, we paired up with Mrs. Briere's grade 4 class to take part in 'The Great Spider Catapult Challenge"! Yes, you read that correctly! The Kiddos were paired up with a another pair from grade 4, given a basket of materials, and were encouraged to collaborate, plan, experiment, and try to build a successful catapult that could launch a plastic spider down the hallway. The Kiddos were completely engaged and I marvelled at the conversations I overheard.
It wasn't long before spiders were flying through the air. With some carefully crafted questions, the Kiddos began to experiment with various angles to see if they could change the trajectory of the spider. Once each group was finished, we met in the hall to see whose catapult could garner the most points!
Many of the catapults ended up shooting spiders straight up and not forward, but I was extremely happy to overhear conversations about how they would change the catapult next time. It was a crazy afternoon, but one filled with a ton of learning, cleverly disguised with this engaging STEM activity!
