Next week we will begin exploring the concept of geometry and measurement in math. We will engage in many different meaningful and fun experiences through play to aid in developing knowledge about these concepts.
The key learnings will be:
- Students can describe and build with 3D objects shaped like a ball, box, and can. It is important that students know that these objects come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
- Students will also learn to compare different objects using measurement concepts such as taller, longer, heavier or holds more.
There are a lot of fun ways to practice these concepts with your kiddo at home! Some examples are:
- Have your child hunt for objects around your home. Ask your child to find items that are shaped like a ball, a box or a can
- Give your child a bag of groceries. Ask your child to sort the items by shape and explain the sorting rule before putting them away.
- Show your child two cups that are different sizes. Ask your child which cup holds more. Fill one cup to the top with water. Then pour the water into the other cup to see which holds more.
- Place a solid object in a brown paper bag. Ask your child to feel the object inside the bag and describe it to you. If necessary, ask: “Does it feel round? Does it have flat sides?”
