Makerspace

One of my goals this year was to create a 'makerspace' in our classroom. In essence, a makerspace is a place where students can gather to work on projects, collaborate, create, problem solve and learn perseverance. These skills are incredibly important in 21st century learning. I read a statistic the other day that said 65% of the occupations the students in Kindergarten right now will have, haven't even been created yet. That is hard to fathom. What we do know though is that the skills mentioned above will be imperative in whatever field they will join. I believe a huge part of my job is to provide opportunities for the Kiddoes to develop these skills. Makerspace is an excellent opportunity for this kind of learning. "You can see the broader principle of “design-make-play” as students use design processes to tackle problems in a meaningful, organized and inventive way, while also acquiring deep knowledge of how things work through making and developing curiosity, exploration and a passion for learning through play."(ISTE website) The kiddoes have access to a variety of different materials with which to explore. They will have opportunities to learn about circuits, electricity, motors, robotics, and coding to name a few. I am excited to see how this centre and learning will evolve.

Stay tuned!!!
