Landfill

After recess today, the kiddoes noticed something strange in the room. There was a blanket covering a large pile of something in our post office centre. Of course, they were all very curious to find out what could be under the blanket. I pulled off the blanket and revealed what was underneath: a landfill. The kiddoes were NOT happy to have a bunch of garbage in our post office centre, and one student even stated that looking at the landfill was "hurting her heart".

All of a sudden, one kiddoe yelled out, "Miss O! Some of that stuff can go in the recycling- we can sort it!" I told them that they were correct, some of the stuff in our landfill could go in the recycling. I asked them what they thought that might do to our landfill. "It would make our landfill smaller!" exclaimed one student.

I then showed them how we could sort the objects (paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, and glass) into different areas in the room. We then took turns taking objects from our landfill and placing them in the correct recycling spot. As we were doing this, we noticed that our landfill was getting smaller and smaller. "Miss O, my heart is starting to feel happier now!" stated one student.

After we had sorted everything, we talked about how much they helped the earth today just by recycling. "Hey! We could do this at home and help the landfill in real life!" one kiddoe stated.
