Today, a lesson stemming from our arts education curriculum
(CPK.4) was presented to the Kiddoes. As the topic of "turkeys"
seemed to keep coming up in discussions with Thanksgiving quickly approaching,
I presented to the Kiddoes some information surrounding the differences between
farm and wild turkeys. It was an interesting discussion as we learned many
"cool" facts that were both surprising and at times quite funny. I
then presented a challenge to the class to create an image of either
a wild or farm turkey and incorporate some of the facts we
discussed. I described to the Kiddoes the concept of space on a paper and
how an artist will use space to enhance a drawing. Rather than just quickly
drawing objects anywhere, artists will think how does the selection
and placement of objects portray meaning. With this in mind, we set
out to create visual representations. As always, the Kiddoes did an amazing job.
It was quite interesting to listen to them explain why there was a barn
and fence in the picture of a farm turkey, or why there was a tree and
seeds on the ground where you might see a wild turkey in their representations.
