Winter Clothes

For some reason it has been a struggle convincing the Kiddoes to wear the winter clothes that have been sent to school. Often they try and sneak out without putting on mittens, snow pants etc. I decided to try a different approach today in explaining why it is important to wear these articles of clothing. I made up a story about making hot chocolate last night, but by the time I got to, it was cold. I asked the Kiddoes, "Why did it change temperature?" They came up with lots of answers, but couldn't quite explain where the heat went. Instead of reading a book, I turned on a Magic School Bus episode about heat and insulation.

The video did a great job of explaining how and why heat escapes from people, objects and how to retain it. When the episode was finished, we discussed what we learned and had a serious conversation about outdoor clothing and why it was important and how it acted like insulation. Here is hoping this lesson did the trick!!!
