I Wonder......

One of my goals for the Kiddoes in the room is to help instill and in many cases, support, already established inquisitive minds! Today, we began using the website www.wonderopolois.org to explore random wonders. One of the Kiddoes in the room was telling me he went to Boomers (trampoline centre) on the weekend, I inquired what he did there. "Bounce!", he told me. I then asked, "Why are trampolines bouncy?" I opened up the site and showed the Kiddoes a video of some extreme trampolining. As we watched the video, I gave some examples of how to make 'wonder statements'. For example: I wonder why there is a net? I wonder why he jumps in the middle of the trampoline? I wonder how he can jump so high? It took some encouraging to get the Kiddoes to begin to make 'wonder statements' rather than making guesses about questions. Once we charted some of our wonders, we began to discuss possible answers. Our discussion was lively and it was amazing to see every single Kiddoe engaged.

What we learned today:

Language Arts: Shared writing and reading, reading/writing strategies, introduction to a question mark, making inferences, making connections to self knowledge and experience, accessing information

Science: explanation of physical forces

I am hoping to replace circle time 2-3 times per week and introduce 'wonder journals' through which we will be able to explore everything and anything our hearts desire. Stay tuned to see when our discussion turns to presenting the new information we are learning!
