The Snowy Day

This week we read the story "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keets. It is a wonderful story and an excellent example of how simple illustrations and the placement of people or objects on a page can tell a story better than words can. We discussed how Keets used perspective, to show movement and to tell his story. It was incredible to watch the children read the story through pictures before we actually read it with words!!! I then challenged the Kiddoes to see if they could create their own image of a snowy day as Keats did by considering how perspective could help them to tell their story without words. It was interesting to see how this time the Kiddoes really focussed on how art is constructed to create meaning rather than just scribbling something down on a paper. I decided to expand the project one step further by introducing the concepts of 2-D and 3-D. After a discussion of these concepts, the Kiddoes used a mixture of shaving cream and glue to add dimension and meaning to their pictures. I hope you love their creations and much as we do!!! See your child's e-portfolio to view his/her creation.
