The Power of Technology
A few week ago, the afternoon class and I were chatting about signs of spring. One of the signs we discussed was farmers getting ready for seeding. A few of the Kiddoes had questions about the machinery used by farmers. Rather than try and answer their questions, I let them come up with a strategy to help us find some answers. Of course they wanted to 'ask an expert'. I have a good friend who is a farmer. We tried using Facetime to connect, but unfortunately he wasn't able to answer. The conversation slipped from my mind in the following days until today, when one Kiddoe brought to my attention we never called Myles (my farmer friend) back. We were very excited when we were able to connect with Myles and even more so when we realized he was out in the yard getting all the machinery ready for seeding. He was able to show us all the machinery he uses each spring and discussed with us how they work. He also patiently answered all the questions the Kiddoes posed to him. After we disconnected the call, I asked the Kiddoes if this was their first experience seeing some of the equipment used on the farm. This was the case for approximately half of our class. However, many other students were able to compare the machinery we saw with stories/examples of machinery from their family farms. It was a great discussion and it once again enabled the Kiddoes to feel capable and confident that their questions were worth being discussed by not only our class, but with experts!!! Cheers to the power of technology!
