Capacity/ Last Day

Capacity

Last week we learned about capacity! I held up two different containers filled with popcorn and asked the Kinders, “Which container of popcorn would you want more, the tall one or the short one?” Almost everyone said the tall one because they believed it held more. Some of the Kinders said they wanted the shorter one because they believed that that container held more than the tall one. Considering no one actually knew for 100% certain which container held more, we concluded as a class to figure it out. We emptied the short container and left the tall one full. Next one of the Kinders suggested that we dump the tall one into the short one to see what would happen. So, we did and found that once the tall container was completely emptied into the short container, the short container still had room left. The Kinders were mind-blown! They realized that because the tall container was completely full when we poured it into the short container, the short container could hold more popcorn because there was still room for more popcorn once the tall container contents were poured in.

After we figured this out, we went into groups and did the same activity but with our own bags and cups. We made popcorn together and figured out which container held more- a plastic cup or a plastic bag! You can practice capacity at home by going outside with your Kinder, filling up a bucket of water and adding an array of different containers. Ask your Kinder to figure out which container holds the most, the least and then find two containers that hold the same amount of water. It is a lot of fun to add different types and shapes, short and tall, containers to this activity! Sometimes the container does not always hold what it seems!

Last Day

On Thursday, the Kinders and I spoke about how sad Friday was going to be as it was the last day we get to spend together. Some of the Kinders even pointed out how saying goodbye to someone you are not going to see for a while can be a big deal. I agreed and told them that my heart was feeling pretty heavy about it as well. I explained to the Kinders that although this is kind of sad, there is always a sunny side to sad situations. I asked the Kinders if they had any ideas of how we could make this sad and gloomy situation into a sunny one! All sorts of ideas popped out of their brains!! Someone suggested that we have a fun party to say goodbye so that we could have fun together, one last time. Everyone agreed that this was a great way to turn it around, so we brainstormed some party ideas. Together everyone came to an agreeance that we would have an outdoor party where we would play with chalk, have a dance party, have a soccer game and maybe even do the limbo!!
The following day, we went outside for the last hour and partied like there was no tomorrow! The Kinders and I had a blast dancing to some tunes and enjoying the sunshine. After the bell rang, they gave me a hug to remember. It almost knocked me to my feet!! I wanted to thank the Kinders and you folks for everything that you have done for me this semester. I have learned so much from your amazing little people and cannot wait to see what the future holds for them. Thanks again! - Ms.K
