Wascana Marsh Field Trip

This morning the AM Kinders were lucky enough to embark on an adventure to Wascana Marsh! Although the weather was quite snappy, the Kinders were total troopers and plunged through the cold. We boarded the bus around 9:00 am and met our expert for the day, Doug. Doug had a glowing presence and taught us so much that the Kinders did not have time to think about how cold they were! He taught us about the different types of trees that we could see in the marsh, as well as where to look for signs of animals.

On our adventure, we saw geese, a mouse, some fox and rabbit faeces, as well as animal tracks. The Kinders had a blast trying to decode which footprints belonged to which animals. At the end of the adventure, while we were waiting for the bus, Doug huddled us together and explained that this was a method that muskox used to keep warm. Luckily the method worked for us too! We took 100 steps at a time and then took a break to huddle up like muskox right until we got to the bussing area.

The highlight of our trip was standing on top of a beaver lodge. Doug taught us that beavers do not hibernate but they do stay tucked inside all winter long. We saw many signs of beavers around the marsh, including bark chewed off of the bottom of the trees and some logs that had fallen over.

Unfortunately the combination of wind, snow and cold prevented the PM Kinders from going on the field trip. We also pretended to be muskox and huddled up together to watch a movie instead to make up for our field trip being cancelled!
