Two qualities strong learners possess are inquisitiveness and perseverance. This year, our classes will be spending a great deal of time learning how to investigate 'wonders' as they arise during the day. These investigations provide multiple avenues for curricular connections while promoting confidence and excitement about learning. 21st century learning skills require our students to question, innovate, create, collaborate, share and reflect. The process of exploring wonders enables us to learn these skills.
Today, we were looking at a picture of Lego and began to explore 'wonders' or questions we had about the picture (i.e Why are the pieces different sizes? Why are they different colours? I wonder how long it takes to build a house?). It wasn't long before the following question was raised, "I wonder how Lego is made?" After discussing a few ideas, I presented the Kiddoes with three different ways we could find answers for our questions. The three examples were to look in a book, ask an expert, or look on the computer. We decided to look on the computer and I introduced the Kiddoes to Youtube. We searched together and found a video that showed us how the Lego was formed in a factory and how machines did all the work. The Kiddoes faces were filled with awe. After we were finished researching, we talked about how awesome it is to be able to find answers to our questions. As the year progresses, this process will become more involved. Stay tuned to experience and learn alongside us as we become inquisitive and confident learners!
