International Dot Day

This past Monday in class we celebrated International Dot Day. Right now you may be scratching your head wondering what International Dot Day is. This day has been set aside each year for classrooms around the world to get connected and to inspire students to make their mark! Based on the story "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds, students discover their inner artist and the ways in which they can make their mark. Often in class I overhear students lament about their inability to draw. However, on Monday, we learned that making a single dot on a paper is way to "make our mark" and let out our inner artist. The students were challenged to "make their mark" by drawing dots in crayon along the first letter in their name. Yesterday, I introduced water colours to the classes and explained the 'magic' involved when they painted over the crayon. Audible gasps were heard when they watched the paint bead away from the crayon. Each student is presently having the opportunity to 'make their mark' and create works of art through the simple task of making a dot. There are still a few students left who need to complete their masterpiece before we are able to "show-off" our amazing pieces. Here is a sneak peak of our project.
